If Apple does it correctly, this awkward Android feature may make the iPhone 14 a success.

We're all in favor of the upgrades the iPhone 14 is bringing over the iPhone 13, and one feature I'd love to see is an Always-On Display, provided Apple can figure out what Android manufacturers can't.

An Always-On Display, or AOD for short, is a feature that displays critical information on your phone's display when it isn't in use. Typically, this refers to the current time, battery level, and any new notifications that must be viewed.

The vast majority of Android phones have this feature, and even Apple's more recent Apple Watches support it, although it is currently unavailable on iPhones and iPads.

However, if Apple does incorporate this crucial function in the upcoming iPhone, they will need to learn from Android programmers.

The Always-On approach

When they work properly, Always-On Displays can be really helpful, but when they don't, they can be a frustrating feature that I've learned to quickly turn off. I haven't found a phone that does that perfectly yet, unfortunately.

I've given a few a shot and they work well. As an illustration, Google Pixel phones include a useful feature that enables you to view further information about a notification symbol without having to unlock your device. Having to unlock your phone to check if a WhatsApp message is crucial from your mother or just the nth comment in a busy and monotonous group chat is avoided thanks to this.

You can use line drawings made from portrait photographs as your always-on display on several AODs. For instance, you can make line drawings from portrait images on the Oppo Find X5 Pro and OnePlus 10 Pro that you can use as your always-on display. The majority of other phone manufacturers provide you the option to use photos to make an original AOD, either from scratch or from a pre-selected collection.

However, certain AODs have a variety of problems. On some phones, they can significantly increase battery use, and I've experienced problems with them constantly failing to load on a range of devices.

In order for an AOD to be good, utility and aesthetics must be balanced well. This hasn't happened yet. Here is where Apple might intervene.

The iPhone 14's Always-On Display

Apple has prioritized software functionality in recent years, introducing widgets in iOS 14 and later making them useful. Take into account iPadOS, an adaptation of iOS that makes the UI better suited for bigger tablet screens, as well as the introduction of system-wide dark mode to Apple's devices.

Is it too much to ask for Apple to design an Always-On Display that looks attractive and works well while taking into account both of these areas of interest?

Even though improvements in display technology make an Always-On Display more plausible, Apple may not include one in the iPhone 14. It's odd that Apple hasn't caught up to Android manufacturers considering the function's (potential) usage, but if Apple can figure out the code, we'd like to see it soon.

Finally, the release date for the iPhone 14 has been made public. (Leaked)

History indicates that a Tuesday in September will see the unveiling of the iPhone 14, and a leaker has just disclosed which Tuesday you should mark on your calendar.

According to the Apple-focused website iDropNews, the 2022 Apple September Event will occur on September 13 - precisely in the middle of the month, based on information from its own sources.

It all adds up when you compare it to earlier iPhone release dates. The Tuesday release is the greatest day to bridge the gap between the Friday pre-order date and the following Friday's on-sale date for the iPhone since the iPhone 5 was introduced.

We shouldn't assume that this leak contains any important information as a result; they could just be taking a chance. This could still be a placeholder because, in the past, Apple has released iPhones a week in advance - like with the iPhone 7 - to avoid other conflicts.

According to the leaked website, Apple will conduct an event on September 13th, which may or may not be the launch of the iPhone 14 - but given that Apple routinely releases new iPhones on Tuesdays in September, we're quite sure that day will be the day.

Will there be any more?

The site's sources suggest that a number of other products, aside from the iPhone 14, are on the way, but nothing new is disclosed. Four iPhone 14s—a standard model, a Max, Pro, and Pro Max edition—an Apple Watch 8 with a "Extreme Edition" for more adventurous activities, a more affordable Apple Watch SE 2, AirPods Pro 2, and a new iPad—are all rumored to be coming (2022).

Given the number of new products, it's possible that Apple will host two launch events, like it did in 2020 when new iPads and Apple Watches were introduced before the year's iPhones. If this happens, September 13 will probably be designated for devices other than iPhones, much like it was in 2020, when the iPhone 14 family was released.

We won't know whether anything is occurring on September 13th until September 6 because Apple often announces its launch events a week in advance, however leakers might give us a heads-up.
